Painting Tips

  1. With a mild soap, wash and dry all items before painting. Do not use fabric softener. Ironing is optional but provides a good surface to work on.
  2. Place a plastic wrapped piece of cardboard inside the garment to prevent paints from bleeding through to the back side.
  3. Use glitter paints sparingly and position on areas of the shirt that are not likely to be rubbed against.
  4. Textile medium will help the paint to adhere to the shirt, keep the painted areas soft and flexible, and will help reduce fading from washing.
  5. Work from the top down to avoid smearing wet paint.
  6. Acrylic paints can be heart set by tumbling in a warm dryer for 10 to 15 minutes.
  7. Keep items completely flat until dry. Drying time can be anywhere from a few minutes to overnight, depending upon the amount of paint applied and the humidity in the air. When in doubt, wait overnight.

Begin with the large center butterfly with orange, medium size butterflies are rust and smaller ones are brownish brick red. Shoulder one is orange.

Apply fusible webbing to scraps and transfer butterfly shapes, cut them out. Remove paper backing, position on shirt and iron in place.

Pin the paper backings to the front of the butterflies to protect them from the Carnival Spray Webbing. Test the paint before using it on your fabric.

Allow ample drying time, then remove papers from the butterflies.
Cover shirt with a press cloth and iron.

Painting Guide:
On the large orange butterflies, highlight back wings with a sideload of Sunbright yellow where the wings meet. Shade upper wings with Red copper along body and where the wings meet. Outline wings with Copper, then fill in tips of wings with a heavy application of Black. Leave spaces for dots of Gold and White at the wing tips. Veins on the wings are Bronze and the final tep is to fill in the body with a heavy application of Bronze.

Rust butterflies are painted the same way.
